Just tried the speak and spell on the site, and didn't want to bump the existing thread, so I've thrown this in here.
While playing, did any of you think it sounded eerily like WOPR from War Games? I know I did...
I wish it would say 'Shall we play a game' when you click the 'On' button...

I've never seen War Games, but the voice is creepy. Old computerized voices (and even modern ones) can sound pretty scary, lol.

I didn't have a Speak & Spell as a kid, but I had a See n' Say :P Also, in my elementary school we had this automated geography game and I think it spoke...I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. When you turned it on, all these red lights on the side lit up and it beeped, and then the game started. It had interchangeable maps so you could play different games. It also may have had a stylus that you used to play the game and point to the map. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? If you remember playing that, let me know. It's been driving me crazy for a few months, lol.

Hmmm... the closest thing I can think of is a LeapFrog LeapPad, one of which I still own. It had different books you could buy for it that slotted in, but the real magic was the stylus, which looked rock solid but had some way of sensing different words on a page, sending that back to the main circuitry which would then check the cartridge (usually books you could buy for the LeapPad had extra cartridges) for the position and action to take with regards to the info fed back from the pen.
Your geography game may have been something like it, but much older IMHO.

EDIT:

about as close as I can find to my actual unit, can't remember the exact differences, thought I could, ah well.
One more thing I forgot to mention is my LeapPad also has a 3.5mm jack, I never used that, so I don't know whether it's for headphones or an AC adaptor (though the latter I would never expect to use a 3.5mm jack instead of a standard DC connector)
EDIT #2:

My exact LeapPad... :)

I FOUND IT! It was called GeoSafari! Oh my gosh, so many memories coming back, LOL. I can still remember the beeping sound it made when you turned it on or got the answer right. Apparently it's from the 80's...I went to a small private school and thinking back on it, a lot of our education tools were a bit outdated...we also used those SRA cards that were probably from the 70's, lol.

Sorry! Back on topic  I'm just overjoyed that I finally remember what it was.

My school also had the SRA cards... the only thing they kept up to date with was computers. Their internal motto must have been 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'
